Gas, Oil, or Electric?

Thanks to modern developments in technology, we now have multiple options when it comes to heating a building. Where once we only had wood-burning options, we now have gas, oil, and electric furnaces to choose from. So which is right for your commercial space? Let the experts at Quality Plumbing and Heating Inc. help you decide.

Gas Furnaces

Natural gas furnaces became popular in the 19th century and are now the most common type of furnace. Because commercial buildings can often connect directly to municipal natural gas lines, this type of furnace is very convenient. Gas furnace installation costs are fairly average, and heating bills tend to be affordable, as natural gas is readily available. The best gas furnaces are also highly efficient, further making them a cost-effective option. However, if your building doesn’t already have gas line connections, the installation costs can be quite high, as new lines will need to be run.

Electric Furnaces

Since most modern buildings already come with electricity, electric furnaces are very common and convenient in most situations. Of all the furnace options, electric is the most customizable and works well with other modern technology such as smart thermostats. Electric furnaces are safe, with no threat of gas leaks, and are highly efficient, wasting very little energy. However, keep in mind that electric furnaces will raise your electricity bill during the winter months and they depend on the electrical grid, so when the power goes out so does your heat.

Oil Furnaces

Oil furnaces are not quite as popular as gas or electric and tend not to be quite as fuel-efficient. However, oil burns hotter than either gas or electric so an oil furnace can heat a building much faster. Installation costs tend to be higher for an oil furnace, but they make up for the added cost by being more durable than the competition. Oil furnaces can last for 20 to 30 years compared to the 12- to 15-year life expectancy of an electric furnace. Heating bills, however, will also tend to fluctuate as the price of oil changes from year to year. Finally, oil is actually the safest furnace option as there is no chance of a harmful gas leak or damage to the electrical grid.
